Politician: John Boehner

John Andrew Boehner is the 61st Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. He assumed this office on January 5, 2011. A member of the Republican Party, Boehner is the US representative of Ohio’s 8th congressional district. He has been serving since 1991.

Between the years 2007 and 2011, Boehner was the House Minority Leader. He was the House Majority Leader for a year before that. Since he is the Speaker of the House, he is second in line, after the Vice President to the presidency of the United States

Born in Reading, Ohio, Boehner’s childhood was spent in a large family of 12 children of German and Irish descent. At the age of 8, Boehner was working in the family bar. He attended Moeller High School and as he graduated, he enlisted for the Vietnam War in the United States Navy. He was dishonorably discharged due to a bad back after a period of 8 weeks. Post this, he went on to get a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1977 and he became the first person in his family to have attended college. 

Boehner was on the board of the trustees of the Union Township in Butler County in Ohio. Between 1985 and 1990 he served as a representative of the state.
